Everett Raymond Kinstler
Everett Raymond Kinstler is a native New Yorker who began his career at age 16 drawing comic books — notably Zorro, Hawkman, and The Shadow— and hundreds of magazine illustrations. As one of the artists of the Golden Age of Comic Books his work influenced the Pop Art school.
Throughout his long and distinguished career Kinstler has focused on painting portraits, landscapes, and watercolors. As a leading portraitist, he has painted eight U.S. Presidents (Richard Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald J. Trump), and his portraits of Ford and Reagan are the official White House portraits. Kinstler also painted 60 U.S. Cabinet Officers (more than any other artist in American history), four U.S. Secretaries of State, and U.S. governors and senators.
Other noteworthy sitters for Kinstler include Tennessee Williams and Tom Wolfe; Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalí, and Norman Rockwell; Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg; and Tony Bennett, Carol Burnett, James Cagney, Plácido Domingo, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, Christopher Plummer, and John Wayne.
Kinstler’s memberships include the National Academy of Design (N.A.), American Watercolor Society (AWS), and Pastel Society of America (PSA). He has authored five books and taught at both the Art Students League of New York (where he himself studied) and the National Academy of Design. A documentary on his career aired on several PBS stations.
The artist’s work is represented in such major museum collections as The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City), the Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown, OH), the Brooklyn Museum (New York City), the Museum of the City of New York (New York City), and the Norman Rockwell Museum (Stockbridge, MA).
The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (Washington, DC) owns more than 100 Kinstler originals, and in 1989 the organization awarded him the Copley Medal, its highest honor. Portraits, Inc. presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and their annual scholarship winners continue to be selected in his honor. Kinstler will be presented with a Living Legend Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 American Masters exhibition at the Salmagundi Club.
Kinstler is represented by Haynes Galleries (Franklin TN and Thomaston ME) and Jeanie du Pont of Portraits, Inc. (Birmingham, AL; Flat Rock, NC; and New York City).
